Summer

Autumn

Winter

Today's weather was so pretty and quite perfect for beach. The entire day was fully sunny and no rain. So, we didn't waste this weekend just in shopping and watching movies at home. We went to a small island in Southern Gothenburg, Vrångö. It has a very nice beach for bathing. Here we got a magnificent view of the sea. Enjoy some excellent pictures of the island.

Round Tower-probably the most peculiar and unattractive building in the city

Spiral ramp leading up the tower- can be a good place for hide and seek game

Hotel Crown where we have been

Next day seeing the gloomy morning we were worried it might have rained. But luckily enough we got very good weather.
We took another way other than Stroget to reach little mermaid which locates in Langelinie Harbour. This street lies beside the Cristianshavn Canal. This side of the city was so quiet, only few shops and no crowed, except some tourists were taking canal cruise as there is a checkpoint here. On the way we saw some beautiful monuments. A much more artistic building is the 'Church of our Saviour' with snail shaped spire and golden dome on the top. The picture of the church is given beside. Another instittution here is the 'Royal Library', which is popularly known as 'Black Diamond'. This is also where we saw the former Stock Exchange and Parliament building.

Cristianshavn Canal-atmosphere is much peaceful here

Next to Cristianshavn we found another harbour- Nyhavn(New Port) Canal. This harbour gets a different look. There are many pavement caffes, outdoor resturants, bars and lots of sightseeing boats and a huge memorial Anchor here. All these have made that place much more enjoyable and pleasant. We spent little while here taking pictures and looking around.

Nyhavn Canal-much more crowded

Before the mermaid statue we visited Amelienborg square which is surrounded by Royal Palace. It has always been the official residence of kings and Queens of Denmark and is guarded day and night by Royal Guards. At the moddle of this huge square a statue of Frederik V stands. Just across the castle there is a beautiful church which is known as Marble Church. Here we also saw Opera House which has a unique location on the waterfront of the Dock Island in the inner harbour Holmen, facing Amalienborg Palace. Beside is the picture of the Marble Church.

Now we were heading towards Kastellet which looks like an star shaped island and at the end of whose the mermaid statue sits. At the entrance we saw Saint Albans Church and Gefion fountain.

The Gefion Fountain

I think no one can be found who didn't hear the beautiful fairy tale of Little mermaid by Hans Cristian Anderson. In my childhood I was a huge fan of the cartoon by disney and its tragic consequences made me feel sad. A little mermaid who fell madly in love with a human, gave up her tongue to get legs like human for sake of love. The sculpture pictures her as she sits and looks out over the water, reminiscing her lost childhood in the see as a mermaid after never having married the prince.
This bronze statue installed on the bank on a stone near the beginning of the Langelinie dock, is a famous symbol of both Copenhagen and Denmark.

Little Mermaid

We were on a short vacation in Copenhagen last week. We stayed two days and had some great time there. It was four hours journey by train from Gothenburg.

We had planned out our tour before we started. I had even made a list of the attractions to be seen. The list contained little mermaid, Tivoli garden, Stroget, and historic monuments like Amelienborg and Rosenborg Palace and some other attractions.

We arrived Copenhagen central station at about 4.00 in the afternoon. Being very close to the station, we got into our hotel on feet. After having lunch we came out to explore the city. We had very good weather on our entire trip. The nice thing here is that most of the attractions locate within a short distance and very handy for the central station. After walking a little while we reached Stroget.

The Shopping street called "Stroget"-longest pedestrian street in Europe

Stroget is one of the longest pedestrian streets in Europe formed by a series of streets and squares crossing the whole of the old city. It's a shopping street too. It begins in Town Hall Square and ends in King's Square. In between there are some other squares- old Square(Gammeltorv), New Square(Nytorv) and Amagertorv Square. It was really great fun walking in this long path and looking around lots of interesting shops and resturants, souvenir shops, street entertainment on both sides and beautiful fountains in the squares.

Copenhagen Town Hall Square(Rådhuspladsen)

There is Dragon Fountain in the center of Town Hall Square(Rådhuspladsen). This square is the largest square in Copenhagen and surrounded by a gigantic fortress and the bus terminal.

We crossed the road in the square and coninued to walk. The first section of Stroget, Frederiksberggade, links Town Hall Square with the twin Old and New Squares. This is the gateway to the city center for people coming from the nearby Central Station and is, therefore a busy street. In the center of the square is the Fountain of Charity, which once supplied the city with drinking water.

Royal Theater in Kongens Nytorv-New King's Square

Taking Nygade and Vimmelskaftet streets, we came to the heart of Stroget, Amagertorv Square. Here we saw Royal Copenhagen which houses an exhibition of the best of Danish art and craft work. The last section of Stroget runs through Ostergade, where you will see the department stores Illum and Magasin.

While walking in the Stroget we saw a very interesting thing, Copenhagen Rickshaw, a kind of transport like cycle. Rickshaw is one of the main means of transport in Dhaka, capital city of Bangladesh. So, it is not unfamiliar to us at all but we were surprised at seeing such things in Copenhagen, though a bit modernized.

On the way back to hotel we entered Tivoli Garden which is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world. It lies between Town Hall Square and Copenhagen Central Station. It's a very nice place to enjoy a concert or show, to have meals or to watch night-time fireworks display. There are few rides here but i didn't find it much interesting. Rather other things like artificial lake in park Carstensen, viking ship, Chinese Pagoda and the performance in Pantomime Theater were all very entertaining. We planned to see little mermaid next day. Below you will find some pictures taken in Tivoli.
