Make A Trip

Next day seeing the gloomy morning we were worried it might have rained. But luckily enough we got very good weather.
We took another way other than Stroget to reach little mermaid which locates in Langelinie Harbour. This street lies beside the Cristianshavn Canal. This side of the city was so quiet, only few shops and no crowed, except some tourists were taking canal cruise as there is a checkpoint here. On the way we saw some beautiful monuments. A much more artistic building is the 'Church of our Saviour' with snail shaped spire and golden dome on the top. The picture of the church is given beside. Another instittution here is the 'Royal Library', which is popularly known as 'Black Diamond'. This is also where we saw the former Stock Exchange and Parliament building.

Next to Cristianshavn we found another harbour- Nyhavn(New Port) Canal. This harbour gets a different look. There are many pavement caffes, outdoor resturants, bars and lots of sightseeing boats and a huge memorial Anchor here. All these have made that place much more enjoyable and pleasant. We spent little while here taking pictures and looking around.

Before the mermaid statue we visited Amelienborg square which is surrounded by Royal Palace. It has always been the official residence of kings and Queens of Denmark and is guarded day and night by Royal Guards. At the moddle of this huge square a statue of Frederik V stands. Just across the castle there is a beautiful church which is known as Marble Church. Here we also saw Opera House which has a unique location on the waterfront of the Dock Island in the inner harbour Holmen, facing Amalienborg Palace. Beside is the picture of the Marble Church.

Now we were heading towards Kastellet which looks like an star shaped island and at the end of whose the mermaid statue sits. At the entrance we saw Saint Albans Church and Gefion fountain.

I think no one can be found who didn't hear the beautiful fairy tale of Little mermaid by Hans Cristian Anderson. In my childhood I was a huge fan of the cartoon by disney and its tragic consequences made me feel sad. A little mermaid who fell madly in love with a human, gave up her tongue to get legs like human for sake of love. The sculpture pictures her as she sits and looks out over the water, reminiscing her lost childhood in the see as a mermaid after never having married the prince.
This bronze statue installed on the bank on a stone near the beginning of the Langelinie dock, is a famous symbol of both Copenhagen and Denmark.
